Charles Webster Interview

  1. You released your first album under your real name last year. How would you describe your new project “Born on the 24th of July” and the remix project “Remixed on the 24th of July”?

It’s a more personal album, I think when you can’t hide behind a band name and you only use your given name them music has to be honest and personal.

  1. You are a living legend and you saw a lot of changes and evolution in House Music.

What would you say? Which one was the most creative time/decade?

I suppose I would have to say the most creative and important time was the beginning of it all in the late 80′s…as producers and musician were really thinking on their feet and coming up with new stuff all the time, my favourite period in house music was the early 90′s, some of the tracks coming out of N.Y.C and Detroit still sound futuristic today.

  1. A lot of house producers or djs are very influenced by the former disco and

garage times. Where did you come from? Are you also a “salsoul hustler”?

oh yes…I was soooo into disco music when I was a teenager, also punk music, I think that’s where my music comes from, a blend of the soulful, funky and the experimental.

  1. Which records has been burning your mind for years?

“man machine”, “computer world”, “innervisions”, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell etc…..

  1. In your opinion – which artists/musicans release most dopest stuff out there?

All kinds of people…I listen to all kinds of stuff, I tend to enjoy songs more than instrumental music, though I do listen to jazz…in the house/electronic sphere I really love Kenny Dixon Jnr, his music is very passionate.

  1. Your new album is described as “soulful & atmospheric post-club-experience”. The journalists have

always been creating such designations around the record to be able to put it into fixed categories.

    Does that disturb you?

Yes, it does… I wish they could just review music as music without having to compare or categorize it, I guess there’s nothing I can do about it…the media is just a lottery, one man’s mellow and beautiful is another man’s boring and dull…oh well.

  1. How many compromisses must one permit to be able to live from the music?

None

  1. You have been releasing music for years under different names such like “Furry Phreaks”, “DJ

Profile” or “Megatonk”. Most famous was “Presence”. Did you need so much names and characters

to create fresh music or was it only label politics?

A little bit of both, some labels want to have a project name exclusively so that necessitates coming up with loads of names (especially in the early stages of your career), also it’s fun slipping into different personalities and playing around with different styles

  1. I read you dream of cooperations with Ricky Lee Jones, Natalie Merchant and Carol King!

Is that true? Despite of all house productions there also are a love for the typical songwriter

    music?

Absolutely, everything I do is based on ‘songwriter music’, to me the lyrics and melody are the most important parts of any piece…I grew up listening to my fathers Bob Dylan records (still listen to them to this day) and my mothers early Kraftwerk records…a perfect blend of music style don’t you think?

  2. Absolutely. What do you think about that new Detroit stuff from Parrish and Moodyman? It isn’t such a mixture of that perfect blend? Did you ever meet

one of them?

I love their music, and all the other guys… I never met any of them….i think Moodymann just put one of my tracks on a compilation he has done for Mahogani music’

  1. You had 2004 on of the biggest deep house underground hits with your remix for Justin Martin’s

“Sad Piano”. What will we hear from you in the next month?

I’ve done loads of remixes this year, more than ever I think….da lata – ‘serious’…soldiers of twilight – ‘believe’….ethnic heritage ensemble – ‘running in the street’ …. Should be the next ones to be released…also I have an e.p of new tracks out on my label (Miso) in January under Furry Phreaks, but my main focus for now is the next Presence album.

  1. The Detroit (Techno) Sound is pervasively. The legend said you worked in the middle of the eighties with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May in the studio. Tell us something about that issue?

I used to be a studio engineer in the mid to late 80′s and all the Detroit guys came through there at some point, I learnt a lot from them….mainly Juan Atkins.

  1. Your “Remixed”-Lp feature a lot of high quality musicans/producers

( Herbert, Daniel Wang, UFO…) who each particular of them has his own visions and

philosophy of music. Could you give only persons like them the order to make a remix?

Yes, I could only give the tracks to people we could trust, we had a few failures along the way, but they were not my choice ( I won’t mention any name) I think it’s my right to choose who I respect to fiddle with my music.

  1. One could hear on “Forget the past” Sara Jay from former Massive Attack times with a nice spoken (poetry) word chat. Are there any preferences about that style?

Do you like acts like Ursula Rucker or Saul Williams?

I like the spoken words stuff, it works so well over all styles of music

  1. What do you think about the modern versions of soul music like the hot current stuff from SA-RA or Platium Pied Pipers? Could one compare that quality with the old orginal soul tunes from 70s?

I like a lot of the new stuff, I also hate some of it , it’s so cynical…

  1. You started up a new label with Atjazz! What’s going on with MISO Records?

the original idea was to do with Martin(at jazz) but in the end I did it myself (we are going to do some music together at some point), we’ve got a load of great stuff lined up for 2005…music from Sara Jay(as lo;rise with me), jimpster, markus enochson, shakedown, dean dacosta, clyde, yoav B, todd sines…lot’s of cool stuff…also myself and Terra Deva are doing a new Furry Phreaks projects together…we are also thinking about doing my first mix CD/complilation through Miso

  1. Kuma took a ride around the globe. How is he?

He is fine…he is with me in Sydney for NYE fun….he is such a busy little guy…so is his best friend Giovanni (you can see photo’s of their travels and their diary etc on www.misorecords.co.uk

  1. What is your personal jazzriot?

life

Thank you very much.
